The importance of "I must"
|
Bringing children up to truly understand the importance of "I must" and "I ought" is perhaps one of the most challenging responsibilities of a parent. And yet, it is one of the most important responsibilities. To do as they ought is the child's first duty, and one which when mastered, will enable freedom in the path of dutiful living. After years of observation, Charlotte Mason realized that the reason "persons in authority fail to obtain prompt and cheerful obedience from their children is that they do not recognize “must” in their own lives." They rely too heavily on choice, electing to do this or that, go here or there, seemingly unaware of the compelling "must" that should be directing their speech and action. When teaching your child the importance of "must", you secure for them conscientious thought, enabling joyful obedience, and the acquiring of virtuous principles that will eventually guide their lives on paths of righteous living.

In Gardens Nook preschool, children are daily encouraged towards doing as they ought. At this age, there is a heightened focus on the self, and needs and desires are therefore driven by this inward focus. Our duty is to lift their eyes to consider the presence and needs of those around them. In doing this, they become more aware of how to live harmoniously with one another. This is kindness, this is love. Obedience is a duty towards conscientious living, mindful of one's contribution and added value to community.

At Three Peaks school, the importance of "must" is held in high regard. Our children are not only called to good work ethics, giving of their best in every task, they are also called to serving others out of selflessness and sacrifice. We believe that our school should be a place where children learn to serve others and care for all that the Lord has given us. When mindful of our duty in this world, there is a sense of purpose and belonging. When doing as we ought, we contribute volumes to the well-being of others and grow to be individuals of virtue and dignity.

Coming weekly to the Lord, we commit the following to Him in prayer:
|
"But the first duty of the parent is to teach children the meaning of must; and the reason why some persons in authority fail to obtain prompt and cheerful obedience from their children is that they do not recognize must in their own lives."

Wishing you all a wonderful week,
