Consider a child, smitten by the wonder of a small mountain lizard. So taken is she that her mind is set on finding every one she can. With each step she searches, scanning the rock face for the static creature. Suddenly, shouts of jubilee, her heart rejoices as she's once again acquainted with her old friend. Such a picture illustrates the true heart to mind interaction taking place when children experience real relationships - their hearts are moved and their mind follows. Charlotte Mason viewed these relations as integral to education; for it is only when a child experiences true relations that grip both heart and mind that knowledge finds a home within and remains close for years to come.
"What we are concerned with is the fact that we personally have relations with all that there is in the present, all that there has been in the past, and all that there will be in the future––with all above us and all about us––and that fullness of living, expansion, expression, and serviceableness, for each of us, depend upon how far we apprehend these relationships and how many of them we lay hold of." (Charlotte Mason)

Abigail Adams once stated that, “Learning is not attained by chance. It must be sought for with ardour and attended with diligence.” She understood that knowledge is attained through strenuous effort. At Gardens Nook, we encourage the discovery of knowledge through rich activities that call for diligence and attention. The alphabet arc is one such activity. Through careful layout, children understand the nature of letters, observe relations between upper- and lower-case, and freely manipulate letters to form words. Although little fingers still require much support, our children learn to value phonics - especially after becoming well acquainted with her.

It's a beautiful sight watching children interact with kindness and consideration. Three Peaks works hard to establish healthy friendships that span different age groups, cultures, and interests. One way to accomplish this is to provide countless opportunities to mingle. Recently, a hike up our glorious mountain afforded our grade 4 to 7 children a full morning together. Whilst learning about leopard conservation, motion cameras, and alien vegetation, our children experienced the importance of encouraging one another, exercising patience, and supporting those less stable. Observing children come into character, taking initiative, and applying wisdom was a truly humbling moment.

“But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind."

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend,
